Insights on setting goals 1. Outside the classroom, we sometimes work differently.
The human brain doesn’t always use a chronological or hierarchical approach. It often uses a more indefinable approach. This means it might come up with a goal statement first before even considering the obstacles or the role. The next time it might use an unsatisfied role and search for a goal and benefits to satisfy it. In other words, every goal might originate from a different place. Feel free to let them. Just remember it is important that you give all elements consideration when you choose a new goal.
Our education system focuses on filling our heads with data, facts, and figures. The learner is often passive.
Insights on setting goals 2. Goal setting requires assessment and problem-solving skills.
Goal setting involves application and organization. The learner is active and requires original thinking, lateral thoughts, personal independence, and responsibility.
Goal setting is a formal process for personal planning.
Insights on setting goals 3. By setting goals on a routine basis, you will decide what you want to achieve, and then, step by step, you will move toward achieving those goals.
Goals are what will keep you motivated and focused, both essential to being productive. Think of goals as necessary achievements. In achieving your desired goals, you should start with a positive outlook. You must be excited by the challenges and tasks you have to do to give you the right start or motivation.
As you advance on the road to success and happiness, be sure to keep your goals realistic; do not try to do everything at once. You can’t drive to two different cities at once; neither should you try to accomplish too many goals at once, or you will find yourself feeling pulled apart and overwhelmed.
Insights on setting goals 4. How many long-term goals should you be working on?
Two or three, maximum. If you take on more, it will become increasingly difficult to make time for good quality actions to achieve those goals.
For each new, future goal, I recommend you work through the goal-setting process outlined on this website until you have worked through the process a few times and are comfortable with it. This will take some time and force you to concentrate on successful goal-setting elements fully.
It’s like Confucius said, “I see, I forget. I hear, I remember. I do, I understand.”
You have to do it to understand how it works and to master it. Once you have got it, you will be able to enjoy it and reap the benefits.
As you get more experienced, you might skip some steps, especially when your goals have common denominators. After all, you can always work through the entire process when you plan a goal in a territory you are not familiar with.
Insights on setting goals 5. Hold on to a journal.
On days when the going gets tough and your enthusiasm for goal setting wears thin, your journal will be there to remind you what it’s all about. Your mission and vision statements are there, as are your dreams. You have recorded them to enable you to move forward and read them on a rainy day.
You can follow your progress and gain courage from it.
If you commit to your written goals and are diligent, you are halfway to accomplishing happiness and success.
People who set goals and follow up on them are usually better capable of living their life to the fullest.
Just think of the time you set a goal and steadily worked toward it to ultimate success: the thrill of losing weight, completing a marathon, planning a lavish wedding to look back on, starting a home-based business, saving money or earning a college degree, and feeling fulfilled and happy with your achievements.

- Steadily moving toward and achieving the results you want by losing a pound each week
- Clear and focused direction, giving you a sense of accomplishment and purpose when you trained for the marathon
- High enthusiasm for what you had in mind as you planned your wedding
- Boosted self-esteem, confidence, and belief in your ability to make it happen and feeling in control by finally saving money instead of getting into debt
- Efficient and effective use of your time preparing for your exam
These are just a few of the many benefits you will reap from your newfound knowledge of goal setting.
